Answers to common questions about our vision screening tool.
Taking the test
What do I need to take the test?
A bright screen of at least 33 cm (13″) such as a laptop or desktop, a wireless mouse on a flat surface, and space to sit 3 m (10 ft) away. No download or account is needed.
Can I take the test on my phone?
For accurate results, use a screen of at least 33 cm (13 inches). Most phone screens are too small for an accurate vision check.
Should I wear my glasses?
Yes. Wear the glasses or contact lenses you normally use for seeing at a distance.
How long does the test take?
About 1–2 minutes per eye, so roughly 3–4 minutes for both eyes.
Do I need to create an account?
No. For the paid report we collect minimal information (name, email, date of birth) to create and send your PDF.
Testing children
What age can my child take the test?
From age 3. There are two modes: one for children aged 3–7 and one for ages 8 and up.
My child doesn’t know letters. Can they still take it?
Yes. The 3–7 mode uses picture shapes instead of letters. Show your child the shapes card first so they know the shapes.
Understanding results
How accurate is the screening?
EyeCheck.app is based on clinically validated methods for detecting potential vision issues. It’s a reliable first screening, but not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam by a healthcare professional. How we test
What do the results mean?
A Pass suggests vision is within the normal range for your age. A Refer means you may benefit from a more comprehensive eye exam by an eye care professional.
What does 6/6 or 20/20 mean?
Both mean normal distance vision. 6/6 is the metric version (metres) and 20/20 uses feet. The detailed PDF report shows your score for each eye.
My result says Refer. What now?
Book a full eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. A Refer result isn’t a diagnosis. If your vision has changed suddenly, get care straight away.
What’s the difference between the free and paid test?
The free test gives a Pass/Refer result and shows ads. The paid test ($2) is ad-free and gives a detailed PDF report with specific vision measurements you can share with your eye doctor.
