How to test a preschooler’s vision at home
- Practise the shapes up close. Point to each shape and name it together until your child knows all four.
- Set up the screen. A laptop or desktop at least 33 cm (13″), with your child 3 m (10 ft) away.
- Cover one eye. Use a patch or a parent’s hand. Don’t press on the eye.
- Make it a game. Praise every answer, and keep sessions short.
- Swap eyes. Then do the other eye. Stop and try another day if your child is tired or upset.
When to book a children’s eye exam
Book an eye exam if you notice any of these:
- An eye that turns in, out, up or down
- Squinting, tilting the head or covering one eye to see
- Sitting very close to screens or holding things close to the face
- Rubbing the eyes a lot, or watery or red eyes
- A family history of lazy eye (amblyopia) or squint (strabismus)
- A Refer result from EyeCheck
See a doctor urgently if a photo shows a white or unusual reflection in your child’s pupil, or if your child’s eye suddenly turns or their vision suddenly changes.
